If you are new to Speciality Coffee, the easiest and lowest cost way to brew ground coffee is with a cafetière (also known as a French press).
Once you decide to advance, there is no need to purchase an expensive espresso machine. Gadgets such as an Aeropress, Clever Dripper, Chemex, Hario V60 and the classic Moka pot (aka stovetop) will all give great results.
One of the best advances will be a quality "burr" grinder (not a cheap steel blade grinder) so that you can enjoy the freshest coffee for any brewing method.
